How to use the tool
Set the two colors
Type a hex code or pick from the swatch. In browsers that support an eyedropper, you can pick the color straight from the screen.
Check the ratio
Below it, you’ll see what it covers: 4.5:1 is the threshold for body text, while 3:1 is enough for large text and for buttons and icons.
Fix it if it fails
The button finds the closest color that passes — only the lightness changes, the hue stays, so your brand style doesn’t fall apart.
Frequently asked questions
They are the two WCAG levels. AA requires 4.5:1 for body text and is the practical standard, also the one required in contracts. AAA requires 7:1 and is rarely followed — usually on government and healthcare websites.
24px and up, or 19px and up if it’s bold. For large text the threshold drops to 3:1, because heavier letters are easier to read at the same contrast.
Yes. WCAG 2.1 requires at least 3:1 for input borders, icons and anything else that conveys meaning — not just text.
